Tumble Dryer
The most common dryer in most households is the tumble dryer. They are least complicated and most bought on the market today. Unless you live in an area that causes restriction to leading a vent from your dryer to the outdoors, it is likely that you have a tumble dryer. These types of dryers operate by bringing in dry, cool air and by heating it up inside. This heated air is then passed inside the dryer drum which begins to dry your clothes. The air is then pushed out of the drum and out the vent to the outside of your home. The dryer drum spins to ensure that the levels of moisture stays consistent throughout the entire cycle. Have you ever found your clothes have shrunk in the dryer? This type of drying process is the culprit to shrunken clothes.
Condenser Dryer
This dryer operation is quite similar to the tumble dryer but instead of using air from outside the dryer, a heat exchanger is installed which allows it to utilize air from inside the appliance. The heat exchanger uses the cool air inside of it to heat the air and condenses the moisture into water vapour. This water vapour is condensed and disposed into a collection tank or drain pipe. This type of dryer takes longer to dry clothing and is not the standard dryer most homes purchase. It is only used when an air vent is unable to be installed that leads to the outdoors. This dryer also releases small amounts of moisture into the air within the room it is in.
Heat Pump Dryer
A heat pump dryer is a less common dryer than a condenser dryer. It is very similar to a heat pump dryer except it has a heat pump instead of a heat exchanger. The heat pumps job is to cool down the air after it has been warmed and used inside of the drum. Once the air is cooled, the moisture is condensed into a water vapour and disposed into a drain pipe or collection tank. The remaining air is then reheated and used in the drum again. This process repeats until the cycle is complete and your clothes are dried. This type of dryer is also only used in an area where a vent cannot be installed that leads to the outdoors.
